Abstract: This invention submission provides a novel technique for location estimation between the base stations and the mobile unit and thereby enables received power based location estimation without the need for expensive calibration for each building. For identifying the location of a mobile phone using cellular base stations it is necessary to accurately estimate the distance between the mobile and multiple base stations. Once the distances to at least 3 base stations are known, the location can be calculated using known triangulation methods.

 

Figure 1 illustrates the proposed method for estimating the distance between a reference point (base station) and a mobile phone based on transmit power measurements.
